Olives
We didn't understand anything about olives when we landed here almost forty years ago. However, the more than 400 trees on the property wanted to be worked on and maintained.
Olive trees are cultivated plants and need a lot of care. Especially when they are supposed to bear fruit. The soil needs to be prepared, the trees have to be pruned - and this is a high art - the olive fly (dacus oleae) has to be fought (naturally organically), the olives have to be harvested, taken to the oil mill, ....
At the same time, harvesting the olives is a nice job. Sociable with many conversations, great satisfaction with the growing number of crates full of olives and a pleasant tiredness in the evening. It is no coincidence that some of our dearest friends in late autumn flee the gray German cities and climb the ladder at our place to harvest olives.
